Masks and selections are also super important when it comes to color grading your image will give you just a quick introduction how you can work you already have IDs how you can use that. So it will be sort of repeating some information. Of course if you have Selective Color you can easily use color range for that you can use Apply Image to work separately on the shadows and highlights and I'm just going to show you the simple way how I work. So I create the same few adjustment layers and for color grading I usually love to work with color balance. So I will start with this example. And one color balance will be for highlights.

I'm going to duplicate that, though. There will be four shadows and the last one will be For midterms, I know it's quite many informations. But we can easily go through this. So I'm going to place midterms in the center and similar as we work with the light that we tend to panic mode to luminosity. And now we turn to Blending Mode to Color to not affect the contrast but only the colors. With lights we choose from necessity to not affect the color but just the lights.

So I'm going to change planning mode so of each to color because I don't want to affect any a and a contrast in this case, and I'm going to start with highlights. The same I'm going to select color range, and I'm going to choose highlights This is pretty decent selection. Actually, I can see everything clear over here and I will start with this. Also, I could actually verdad and I can make few corrections. Let's press this. See this selection is pretty decent.

I'm just checking the mask if the mask looks decent for me if it looks correct I can easily from this go to my shadows straightaway so I have already shadows made and mid tones I will sort out later. So start with the highlights over here. And of course the color balance have few options like mid tones, shadows and highlights. And it works but I like to spread this for even better selections to keep more control on that. And I usually look at the image which colors exists as you can see on the highlights we have this warm orangey colors and in channels we have some greens that I think it would work more with the shadows, we could go a little bit more in The science and here instead of this arranges we will try to work with yellow. So I'm actually going to put punch more yellow color and I will see how the cyan would work it actually knocking down some of the orangutans.

So the image get in more yellowish so I would go with something like that have a look before after. So as I said, these images are a little bit more yellowish right now. So I have answered from the shadows, I will go opposite remember we go opposite. So for the shadows, I will add more blue tones into the shadows and maybe just a tiny touch of right over here, but not sure if that would be necessary in this case, maybe not. So this is the first step and also we have some mid tones and meet on site keep as a corrections. We have some of the restaurants over here.

Take on three loads. Perfect. So meet once actually, you can also do through Select and Color wrench. But this is a little bit more complicated as you can see I have mittens. So the main thing is you have to pick the perfect wrench for you. And I choose the wrench, pretty much the one that is in the center.

So that would be something between 110 144 and the perfect balance usually. And of course and the wrench or sorry fuzziness Of course, I keep rather high. It also will be partially responsible for the highlights will not have much to do with that, of course, and now midterms and what I would go with me turns out not this yellowish tone from her. So I also would add just a little bit of silence maybe and just tiny touch of yellow tones Have a look how it all looks. The image before very orangey This is after I knock down some of the Reds from her, and then down some of the oranges from the water, changing it into more yellows and blues on the shadow so a very soft patch. But this is the direction I would go.

And you actually know very simple how you can work that way with the image about me can sometimes create this on the blank mask without any selection. Let's take this is another example. I love this image so much so that will be just a pleasure. I would not change much over here. But we have reds, yellows, some oranges for the highlights maybe and similar. For in the shadows.

We would maybe go a little bit more with blows or opposite. We'll see we'll see The first thing is you need to really understand which colors exist on the image. Let's create a few color balance, highlights, duplicate and shadows and duplicate and instance and all of them will call in the color blending on it. And I will start not luminosity of course. And I will start from highlights taking selection. What I love to work this way I noticed many people work through channels, doing the luminosity masks, which is pretty much the same thing.

But I really prefer to choose my own color range through highlights so I see everything and I try to adjust the highlights as much as possible for my own needs. That's very important for me, so I'm not it's not many people work this way. I think this way is the best works best for me. And that's something I would always recommend you to work for highlights are like rather warm tones. And also I have some cyan because we have some of the same colors over here. Not too much of course.

And I will do invert for the shadows and with the shadows, I was going with cyan for highlights. So for the shadows, I have some rights equal perfect with the cyan background as you can see, and also some of the blue maybe but in this case, not too much blue because this image becomes too reddish. It's already quite red, but I like how the red pops out and could actually add a little bit more Siam for better contrast. And not green actually because green could affect her skin tones in not very nice way. So this image now is strongly popping out. And for me tones once again, I would try to choose the balance for the mid tones and around that probably similar values, I could change the fuzziness a little bit more so it will be rather more harsh.

And I would choose for me Tom's some universal yellow color, very soft, the touching and just a little bit of a sign for the shadows. I could go also with magenta over here which works really nice with the greens that we have. But I was just afraid that would be a little bit too strong. We can actually test this as you can see this effect is too strong. So remember to like Look at the colors you're working with. And during this few simple steps, you can keep hold the control on the colors that exist on the image on the highlights and shadows.

This is my favorite way of working with colors. Doing color grading I'm not, I'm not doing a lot of steps. I use similar masks for many different adjustment layers. Of course, color bands is not only one thing you can work, you can use the same methods for working for example, the filter can just simply press Control command to selection you made and then use the Photo Filter. And the filter that you choose will be applied in the areas that you want. So in this in this case for the highlights, I could go with some oranges to warm up this image.

And that's how it would look like. So as you can see, there's many ways you can work but masks resolve most of The issues you would have if you would not create them because sometimes you would affect the areas you actually don't want to affect.
